Install using Mapsource or Basecamp. Shonkymaps3.51.zip – Use this to install shonkymaps into Mapsource or Basecamp on your windows PC. This contains an installer that will install the full set of shonkymaps, including full topo (including 50m contours), Large Scale, A set of full topo without contours, and finally a transparent contour set. In New Zealand, autoroutable Garmin GPS Street Maps and Topo Maps are available free and legally through the NZ Open GPS Project, a group of GPS enthusiasts that take government and user provided data and compile it to work on Garmin GPS. In most cases loading the Maps onto your GPS device or memory card requires you to have Garmin Mapsource.

First of all I would like to say that you have a very informative forum here.I have read through many of your topics on the montana 600 since I just purchased one this week.I read one one of the many posts by Boyd on installing maps to basecamp so you can access them without hooking the 600 to the computer.I believe it was a link to wiki when it was explained but I can't seem to find it now.
I had topo maps, city navigator, and bluecharts installed in mapsource which I used with my nuvi and legend units but since mapsource doesnt support the montana and it was recommended to start using basecamp here for the montana I installed it today. My topo maps were automatically installed in basecamp but not city nav 2013.
Although I haven't had the montana very long I think I am realy going to like it.
The maps that I have are img files that I hace copied to a 8 g card but i do not have them on cd.

I assume everything is going on on a single PC. Does City Navigator show in MapSource? If it was installed correctly to your PC, it should show in both MapSource and BaseCamp.
You shouldn't be 'copying' IMG files from your PC to any Garmin GPSr. You should be using MapSource or MapInstall (embedded with BaseCamp) to 'install' them on your GPSr or microSD.
If your City Navigator is registered to another device, and you are trying to read it from a device to which it isn't registered (say you have it registered to an Etrex, but sent the map to a microSD card and then put that card in the Montana), I doubt you could read it from the Montana.

You shouldn't just copy the IMG because when MapSource or MapInstall sends it they include more data, like all the tiles in a mapset (more than one IMG) will be listed as a single map you can activate or de-activate.
Are you saying that City Navigator 2013 appears as a choice in the dropdown Mapsource menu, but is not available in Basecamp? If so, then that is very odd. You should see all the same maps in Basecamp. City Navigator is locked to a single GPS device (such as your Nuvi) but is not locked to a computer. So it can be used in both Basecamp and Mapsource on your computer, or even moved to a different computer. But it can't be used on a different GPS.
Garmin's 24k and 100k topo map products are not locked and can be installed on any GPS that you own.
Yes City Navigator appears as a choice in the drop down Mapsource menu but is not available in Basecamp. Yes it is odd Must have been a glitch in the bascamp install. Maybe I'll try reinstalling it if it bothers me too much.
Not sure but the tools at http://www.javawa.nl/gmtk_en.html might help, in that you can see if there are any problems with the maps.
You can also look to see if the maps were properly installed. What operating system are you using? On Windows Vista and Windows 7, look in C:ProgramDataGARMINMaps and you should see a folder for City Navigator.
On Windows XP it should be in C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataGARMINMaps
Thanks for all the info. Yes the maps show up in the garmin folder and I am running windows 7. Another question now on backing up the montana. When I try copying the montana the file size is a little less than what on the gps. I have folder options set to show all files and thought that would do the trick. Should the backup copy be exactly the same size? Is there a step by step to follow?

File and folder count will be equal, but size may be smaller IF you are copying from FAT32 to NTFS.
With hidden folders set to be visible, you are getting everything you need to back it up.
